My Fail-Safe Trick to Choose a Color Scheme

Whether you are remodeling a kitchen or just adding some furniture to your living room, I recommend starting with this easy trick!

Step one, start with something that moves you, but I have one qualifier: It needs to be multi-colored. I recommend looking for a rug, a piece of artwork, some fabric, or a patterned décor item that inspires you.

For my example below I am using a piece of artwork that I think is beautiful. When I saw this it caught my eye, it made me stop to look, it made me feel happy. That is why this piece is a good starting point for me. You will want to find an item that makes you feel something as your starting point.

Once you have chosen an item, look carefully at all the variations of color. The colors you see in the object are the colors you will use when choosing the fixtures, finishes, furniture, and accessories for your space. As you can see in the example on the next page, everything from the hardwood flooring to the sofa to the lamp all relates back to the original colors in this inspiration painting.

I tend to use more neutral, timeless colors for the permanent finishes in a space and for larger furniture items, and more trendy colors on accessories that can be easily changed as the years go by.

If you want to get more digital about this exercise, you can use an app like PANTONE Studio to pull the colors from a photo of your item.

This exercise is not an exact science. The colors you incorporate in your space can be a riff on the colors you see in your inspiration item. For example, you might start with a particular orange but then use a less saturated version of that orange for your curtains or sofa.
