Is Your Remodel Type A, B, or C?

And what does that mean about cost, schedule, and team members?

To answer this question, I am sharing a few pages from my new

In the book, I provide the following quiz to help you determine if your renovation is a:

a. Studs-Out Renovation

b. Change-in-Place Renovation

c. Resurface Renovation

Take a look and see which category your renovation project fits in...

In my Remodel Jumpstart Workbook, I describe each renovation type in more detail and provide a guideline to help you plan your schedule, budget, and team.

Because the "Studs-Out Renovation" is probably the most common, I will share that page with you here.

You will see above a schedule guideline of 6-12 months and budget guidelines of $29,000 - $87,000 for a kitchen renovation or $14,000 - $36,000 for a bathroom renovation. (These numbers were taken from national averages provided by Houzz.com)

Obviously, these ranges are broad. What makes the cost of a renovation project vary so greatly?... THE DESIGN!

When planning a bathroom remodel, an interior designer will help you choose flooring, countertops, cabinetry, cabinetry hardware, tile, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, doors, door hardware, millwork, mirrors, wall treatments, closet interiors, and glass enclosures.

Let's consider what is probably the smallest item on this list: the pull or knob that goes on the cabinet doors. As an example, take a look at the two drawer pulls below. Although they look similar, the one on the left is $138, and the one on the right is $7. If there is this much swing in the cost of the smallest item in your bathroom, then you can imagine how all the materials that make up your remodel can add up to wildly different totals depending on your choices.
